Self-talk is the stream of internal language we use to interpret experiences.
Notice your wording
Statements such as “I failed today” and “I am a failure” carry different implications. One describes an event; the other turns it into an identity.
Aim for accuracy
Useful self-talk does not have to be relentlessly positive. A balanced thought might acknowledge difficulty while identifying one next step.
Try a small exercise
Write down a recurring harsh statement, identify evidence for and against it, and create a more specific interpretation.
Know when to seek help
Persistent distressing thoughts may require an evidence-based psychological approach. Coaching exercises are not a substitute.
